Des Holzbaus neue Kleider
THERE IS NO WAY TO ESCAPE THE FACADES.
From Waltraud Seidlhofer: "Fassadentexte" (Facade Texts), 1976
This quote from Upper Austrian poet Waltraud Seidlhofer hits the nail – or rather, the screw – on the head. Alongside the shape, the façade of a building is its most distinctive design element. It is the obvious feature that people immediately talk about – both when the building is new and 20 years later, when it has developed its characteristic features.
On this day, we are focusing on the seemingly superficial topic of façades. But if you look at the layers behind it, you realise that a façade has a profound influence on a building. This becomes clear at the latest when a façade starts to age. Can it still fulfil its functions for another 10 years? How can it be renovated? How do you deal with existing buildings that need to be renovated?
