Forest bathing with Mandi

Wholesome immersion in nature

In a world full of sensory overload, screen time and hectic lifestyles, many people long for a balance. Forest bathing - or shinrin yoku in Japanese - offers just that: a simple but deeply effective method of reducing stress, improving health and reconnecting with nature

What is forest bathing?

Forest bathing is not about swimming in the forest - it's about immersing yourself in it. It is about being conscious and mindful in the forest, perceiving with all your senses, slowing down and focussing on the here and now. The concept was developed in Japan in the 1980s as part of preventative healthcare and has since spread around the world.

What does forest bathing involve?

Forest bathing is a form of nature mindfulness and can include different elements - depending on your individual needs:

  • Slow, mindful walking - not hiking, not sport, but conscious walking.
  • Activating sensory perception - listening, smelling, touching: What does the forest sound like? How does damp foliage smell?
  • Pause and observe - look at a tree, listen to the wind, simply sit down.
  • Walk barefoot or breathe consciously - feel the connection to the earth, breathe in the fresh air deeply.
  • Creative exercises - e.g. creating a nature mandala, writing, drawing or keeping a nature diary.
  • Meditation or silence - find inner peace without a goal or pressure to perform.

The health benefits

Numerous studies have proven the positive effects of forest bathing:

  • Reduction of stress hormones (e.g. cortisol)
  • Lowering of blood pressure and pulse
  • Strengthening of the immune system
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Clearer mind and better concentration
  • Feelings of calm, connectedness and inner balance

Some scientists also attribute this to terpenes - natural messenger substances released by trees that have a demonstrably calming effect on the nervous system.
